Time is rapidly slipping by and preparations are underway for Operation Christmas.

Aitkin, McGregor, Palisade and Tamarack area businesses, service clubs and individuals have joined together in organizing Operation Christmas.

Operation Christmas is a program coordinated by volunteers to collect and provide Christmas gifts for families in need. In 2011, gifts for 216 families consisting of 489 children were collected in Aitkin County.

Gifts for all ages (0-18) are needed. Gifts should be new and unwrapped. Cash donations are used to purchase additional gifts and toys as donated ones are depleted. In 2011 over $14,000 was spent for this purpose.  Cash donations, in the form of a check, should be mailed to Operaton Christmas, 210 Second St. NW, Aitkin, MN  56431, or dropped off at any of the sites listed below. Checks should be made payable to “Operation Christmas.”

Gift donations will be accepted in the McGregor area at McGregor schools, Grand Timber Bank, Members Cooperative Credit Union, ANGELS office, Grace Lutheran (Log) Church, Floe International, Round Lake Presbyterian Church, Sam’s Grocery in Tamarack and One Stop Gas and Groceries in Palisade. In the Aitkin area: Aitkin Motors, Bremer Bank, Members Cooperative Credit Union, Kinship office and Paulbeck’s County Market.

How does it work?

Families in need of help register in advance by setting up a time to visit the store and pick out gifts for their children. (details will be forthcoming in two weeks in the newspaper). This program is at no cost to the family.

It doesn’t matter what gift(s) are donated (tax deductible) – some kid will enjoy it. Early donations assist organizers in a more efficient coordination of the program.
