May 15 marks the launch of the new online version of the Mille Lacs Messenger newspaper.
We've been online for over a decade now and feel like this new site will be our "home" for some years to come.
At the top you'll see tabs linking to MessAge Media (the parent company of the Messenger) and the Aitkin Independent Age (our sister newspaper).
Note the sections in the main menu, which are similar to those in our previous site: News (timely, "hard news" stories), Community ("soft news" features, etc.), Sports (high school and other), Outdoors, and Milestones (obituaries, etc.).
On the right side of the main menu you'll see links to classified categories (real estate, cars, jobs). Below that in the right column you'll see a list of "hot jobs" from around the region, and if you scroll down you'll find more feeds and links to our local classified ads.
The left two columns contain the main news content of the site. On the home page are links to articles by section as well as some featured stories from current and past issues. Click on the headline and you'll find the complete article.
If you click on any section or sub-section, you'll come to a page that lists articles in that category, with the newest on top.
Some aspects of the site are a work in progress. We haven't transferred all events to the calendar yet, but keep checking back. The calendar search command is also a little tricky, but if you choose "advanced search" and click on the town and category, you should find what you're looking for. We're working on getting it fixed so it's easy to search the calendar.
The archives dating back over 10 years are not yet updated but will be in the near future.
We encourage you to explore the site and comment on articles. You'll need to register (click "signup" in the top right corner) and log in to comment. You can use a screen name, as long as you give us a real email address. Follow the rules, or you could be banned from the site!
This site also allows you to submit other content — articles, photos, calendar items, blogs, etc. We want this site to belong to the community, so please learn to submit your news items!
Thanks for bearing with us during the transition, and we hope you'll enjoy the new site!
