On May 5, Rippleside third graders along with volunteers, school staff and grandfriends held a walk-a-thon at the school.

The event was held to help raise funds to pay for two end-of-year field trips. “The reason we didn’t just ask for money from the parents is because we feel it’s important for kids to be a part of helping to raise the money,” said Carrie Baierl, volunteer and walk-a-thon organizer. The field trips are to Kathio State Park and the school forest at 405th Place in Aitkin.

Students could win prizes for completed laps and were cheered on by grandfriends and onlookers.

The Aitkin Women of Today supplied snacks and water and distributed them along with members of the Aitkin Lions at a table along the supervised route.

“We had a goal of raising between $500-$1,000,” said Baierl. “To be honest, I was overjoyed and actually cried when we surpassed that goal.”
