Ten teenagers from Grace Lutheran Church in McGregor, plus two adult chaperones, participated in a five-day national youth gathering, hosted in Houston. They joined thousands from all over the country to worship, study and help the Houston community with dozens of service projects.

Pastor Erika Foss, former primary pastor at the church, stated, “The gathering itself is a time to come together and hang out with other Lutherans.”

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) has sponsored this gathering every three years since 1988.

The 2018 gathering featured 16 speakers and seven music artists for the nightly mass gatherings, including speakers Stephen Bouman (Executive Director for Domestic Mission of ELCA) and Reverend Aaron Fuller (Navy Chaplain), and artists Tauren Wells (twice nominated for Grammy Award) and Tenth Avenue North (Gospel Music Association’s New Artist of the Year, 2009). Speaking topics included the themes of the gathering: God’s Call, Love, Grace and Hope.

“That was the main event of the whole thing,” Foss commented, “that we gathered together, the energy in the stadium, the worship there, the keynote speakers, that was the main part. Being in the midst of 40,000 people who worship the same way you do is pretty fun. It’s pretty intense and your faith is ‘boostered’.”

Before the official gathering, the Grace Lutheran group enjoyed its own mission work in Galveston. The group spent a total of two days on service projects there. The first day the group cleaned two city parks and a community center. The second day it assisted a soup kitchen, clothing closet, and an AIDS clinic, and visited First Lutheran Church of Galveston, one of the oldest churches in the city.

“The kids loved that because they got to interact with the other kids at the community center, and heard about their town,” Foss mentioned, “I think that would be one of the kids’ highlights.”

Grace Lutheran attends the youth gathering every three years, and it plans on attending the next gathering in Minneapolis in 2021. The church begins raising funds at least two years in advance. To gather necessary funds, it participates in several types of sales, such as baking and books, and accepts donations from the local community.

The Log Church participates in plenty of other community events as well. It started the McGregor Area Clothing Closet 25 years ago, and remains heavily involved in its operation. It also donates to the local food shelf, and organizations dedicated to ending world hunger.

The church encourages visitors for Sunday worship at 9 a.m. It’s located at 48115 Lake Ave. in McGregor.
