Ingeborg Markisen Leighton

Ingeborg Markisen was 19 when she came to Aitkin from Norway.

The whys and hows she happened to choose Aitkin are unknown.

A small glimpse into her life has returned to this area when her grandson donated the trunk she brought with her to the Depot Museum operated by the Aitkin County Historical Society.

David Leighton, who lives in Colorado, contacted museum director Mathew Nix, saying the best place for the trunk is in Aitkin. Ingeborg’s name and destination occupy one side the trunk, which the museum received in January. The other side is adorned with Norwegian rosemaling. The trunk is in remarkedly good condition.

Born in 1866, Ingeborg was destined to have a short life. In 1897 she married John Leighton in Wealthwood and they lived in Nordland Township. The couple had four children but Ingeborg died of “consumption,” or tuberculosis, in 1911. John Leighton went on to have another family and he died in Crosby at an advanced age.

As noted in Aitkin newspaper clippings, Ingeborg’s last name was spelled or misspelled a couple different ways – Markusen and even Martenson.

“We’d like to find out more about Ingeborg,” said Nix, “and hear from her relatives about how and why she came to Aitkin.”
