Melvin L. Holm, 84, Hill City, went to be with God on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, after complications from a stroke.
Melvin was born in 1936 to Jacob and Lucy Holm in New Hartford, Iowa. Melvin graduated from Aitkin High School in 1955. He excelled in football and track, where he was known as the Waukenabo Speedster. Melvin and Delores McNeil were united in marriage on Oct. 27, 1956.
Melvin served in the United State Marine Corp from 1956-1958. Melvin and Delores owned a hobby farm in the Swatara, Shovel Lake area. Their lives became complete after they adopted two children, Mark and Colleen, and later were blessed with their son, Brian. In 1974, Melvin started Northwoods Builders, Inc. with two other gentlemen and in 1978 he became the sole owner. He owned and operated the business for 20 years before selling to his sons in 1998.
He did everything with a servant’s heart. Melvin was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He never missed an opportunity to spend time with friends and family at the hunting shack or the lake. Melvin and Delores enjoyed traveling with friends and visited nearly every state. He was a charter member of the Hill City Lions Club, a member of the Hill City American Legion, the Haypoint Jack Pine Snowmobile Club, and the Hill City Assembly of God Church.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Holm; six sisters; and eight brothers.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Delores; his children, Colleen (Jim) Lamke, Brian (Lisa) Holm; daughter-in-law, Lorinda Holm; grandchildren: Isaac (Annette), Erin (Adam), Scott, Jordan, Austin; and many nieces and nephews too numerous to count.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Shovel Lake Cemetery, Swatara.
