Rodney Frenz Johnson, longtime resident of rural McGregor, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2019, with his family by his side.
Rodney was born on Feb. 8, 1944, in Aitkin, and was raised in Thor Township. He graduated from McGregor High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving three years.
Rodney married his lifelong partner, Erika Doty on May 9, 1964 in Aitkin. After military service, Rodney returned home with Erika and their first daughter, and lived in the McGregor area until 2018 raising four amazing, beautiful daughters.
Through the years, Rodney held many jobs but always worked on the land and in the woods. All would say that this is where he found the most joy and was always a wealth of knowledge about wildlife and plants. Rodney also enjoyed woodworking, building furniture pieces for his family and friends.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Erika; children: Tammy (Mark) Woodward, Princeton; Benita Quigley, St. Paul; Kirstin (Gary) Elmes, Shoreview; Dawn (Brad) Stevens, Manvel, N.D.; grandchildren: Josh and Kayla Svedin, Julia Woodward, Kate and Britt Quigley, Emma and Ethan Elmes, and Lane Stevens; great-grandchildren: Kloey Peters, Tucker and Avrie Svedin; brother, John Nordstrand, North Pole, Alaska; sisters: Alice Lysdahl, Stanchfield; and Joan Arvidson, Montana.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Annabelle Johnson, and brother Donnie Johnson.
At Rodney’s request, no funeral will be held but friends and family are invited to gather at the Rice River Town Hall on July 27 from 1-4 p.m., located at 32270 Minn. Hwy. 65, McGregor, MN 55760.
