Russell Louis Bennett, 70, Bemidji, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020 at his home in Bemidji.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020 at Russell’s home in Bemidji. Arrangements are with the Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji.
He was born on March 30, 1949, in Ironton, Ohio, the son of Raymond and Neveda (Gates) Bennett. He was raised and educated in Ironton, graduating from Ironton High School in 1967. He attended Ohio University from 1971 until 1977, and graduated with a PhD in psychology. He worked for Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio from 1976 until 1978. He moved to Bemidji and started teaching psychology at Bemidji State University in 1978. In addition to teaching he was an independent behavioral consultant from 1980 until 2006. He retired from Bemidji State University as professor emeritus in 2012. During his career he had his research published in; the Journal of Psychology, Behavioral Science, Journal of Social Psychology, and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
On Dec. 8, 2012 He married Tanja Henrickson in the woods on their property in Bemidji. Russell served as a Turtle Lake Township supervisor for 18 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and Master Naturalist. He enjoyed camping, hiking, fossil hunting, cross country skiing, canoeing, tennis and travel. Russ was a lifelong learner and teacher. He loved to study geology, plant life and could identify any tree in the northwoods, and many other places. He will be remembered for his corny sense of humor, his love of music and his time spent outdoors with the people he loved. He loved the northwoods, while a big part of his heart remained in the hills of Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Tanja Bennett, Bemidji; children: Libby (Scott) Fadness, Bemidji; Cassie (Tom) Langhout, Bemidji; Lou (Jami) Bennett, Bemidji; step-children: Beth Simons, Bemidji; Lauralee Simons, Tucson, Ariz.; David (Whitney) Simons, Madison, Wis.; Christopher (Courtney) Maloney, Bemidji; grandchildren: Joshua (Jennifer) Fadness, Kodey (Daniel) Berube, Connor Fadness, Kyle (Nicole) Langhout, Gavin (Ali Long) Langhout, Jaisa (Brett Schussman) Langout, Sadi Bennett, Henry Bennett, and Matthew Maloney. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren and brother, Steven (Cynthia) Bennett, Aitkin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
