Winfield Frank Demenge, McGregor, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2020 at his home. He was 95 years old.
Winfield was born on Sept. 26, 1924 in McLeod County, Minnesota, to parents Walter F. and Ruth E. (Leddin) Demenge. Born the seventh of 15 brothers and sisters, Winfield began his lifelong calling as a farmer at an early age, working for a farmer in Hutchinson, Minn. The family moved to the McGregor area where Winfield spent a number of years logging with his brothers.
In 1950 he bought the farm where he would spend the next 70 years. On June 27, 1950, Winfield was united in marriage to Lillian Eugenia Horner at the courthouse in Aitkin. They were blessed with six children. They raised dairy cattle for many years as well as growing and harvesting crops and making hay. In the 1970s, Winfield began hauling cattle for the farm and in later years for neighboring farmers as well. Winfield’s favorite activity was driving the tractor, whether it was planting, raking and baling hay, or simply “turning the dirt black.” He was proud to be named the Farmer of the Year in 1978.
Hunting camp was a special time for Winfield when four generations of family gathered together. Early mornings spent waiting for that big buck to show up or slow drives around the fields looking for deer. He enjoyed fishing in the local lakes and was always present for the many family gatherings. He will be dearly missed
Winfield was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; grandchildren, Lance Demenge Campbell and Carrie Ann Demenge, and all of his 14 siblings.
Winfield is survived by his children: Cindy (Jeff) Hauser, Tom (Kathy), Tim (Sue), Wendy (Ed) Hamilton, Sam Demenge (Cheryl Cunningham), and Leighanne Campbell (Curt Peterson); 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Betty Demenge and Delores Demenge; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
