GuidePoint Pharmacy will be opening in mid-June on 226 Minnesota Ave. N. in Aitkin. Owner Matt Doucette has worked as manager for the past two years at the GuidePoint Pharmacy in Crosby, which is owned by Mike and Laura Schwartzwald. The couple owns multiple locations throughout the state, with another site to open in Breezy Point in April.

The Schwarzwalds have been of tremendous help with the start of his new pharmacy, Matt said, in addition to his uncle, Mike Cluever of Cluever Construction who has put in endless hours in preparation to renovate the new site. Also, he would like to thank Matt and Nikki Larson for being great colleagues during his time in Crosby.

While the Aitkin location undergoes renovations, Matt said customers are able to order prescriptions  from the Crosby location by calling 218-546-5144. Future refills can be requested by calling the pharmacy, going online to guidepointpharmacy.com, or by the GuidePoint Pharmacy mobile application.

The pharmacy offers free mailing and delivery Monday-Friday from its Crosby location to residents of the Aitkin area, and accepts most insurances including HealthPartners and MinnesotaCare Blue Plus. A loyalty program will offer discounts to customers for in-store purchases, and text and phone call reminders are sent when prescriptions are ready.

GuidePoint Pharmacy’s mission is to “assist patients to achieve the best possible outcomes from their health care decisions by providing them with exceptional education and guidance.”  Services vary from filling prescriptions to over-the-counter medications and diabetic shoes, Matt said.

GuidePoint sets itself apart from competitors by offering exceptional customer service, Matt stated. “We take care of people for whatever their pharmacy needs are, whether that be finding a medication that is out of stock or delivering to their homes. Ultimately, we are helping our customers achieve better health by getting to know them and their needs.”

One way the company differentiates itself is by offering bubble pack Rx, where medications are set up for correct doses in prefilled packs. There are many patients in Crosby that currently utilize this service at the pharmacy. Matt said this helps individuals stay in their homes longer, and helps to decrease hospital readmissions by ensuring they are taking the correct doses at the correct times for each prescription.

“This is really impactful for those who are discharged from the hospital and their prescriptions may have changed,” he explained.

Prior to joining GuidePoint, Matt worked at Riverwood for four years as an in-patient pharmacist for those admitted to the hospital. Once the Aitkin GuidePoint Pharmacy opens, Matt plans to hire one technician. Additional staff will be hired as needed to maintain the level of customer service he wants to provide.

“It is bittersweet to leave the Crosby location because of the relationships I have built, but I do hope to build those same relationships with my customers in Aitkin,” Matt said.

Matt and his wife, Erika, have two sons ages two and four, with a baby girl expected in May. When not working or spending time with his family, he enjoys mountain biking, kayaking, hunting and fishing.

GuidePoint Pharmacy will have a booth at the Aitkin Area Chamber of Commerce – Commerce and Outdoor Show on March 9-10.
