Premier treats for premier pets

Tanya and Mike Swanson recently began baking dog treats (and some human treats) and will sell them at the Glen Farmers’ Market.

Mike and Tanya Swanson built the Premier Pet Lodge almost three years ago in Malmo, and recently they’ve added something new to their family-oriented operation: dog treats.

Mike and Tanya, with the help of their children, Joey, Henry, Sunshine, Teddy and Moses, and two other friends, Katie Skogen and McKenzie Fisher, have run the increasingly busy pet boarding lodge since December, 2016, when it was constructed. Now, as the children grow and expansion becomes more practical, the Swansons have added baking dog treats to their family’s hobbies.

“It’s something the entire family gets to participate in,” said Tanya. While some ideas of further expansion are on hold while the home-schooled children grow up (additional kennel spaces and dog training, for example), the couple agreed that baking was a good idea to realize, as rather than taking time from the family, it gave them more time as a family. The couple originally had the idea years ago, but until their children were old enough to participate, it would have been a difficult task to take on.

Tanya, who has a background in toxicology, emphasized that the treats are free of common pet allergens. The treats are also made with locally-sourced products, such as eggs from the Swansons’ hobby farm and a blueberry crop that will be used for seasonal treats later in July.

Mike and Tanya plan to sell the dog treats and some human treats at the Glen Farmers’ Market. Eventually, they may expand sales to subscription-based local deliveries, if demand merits it.
