Mail theft investigation in Crow Wing leads to arrest of three

Crow Wing County Sheriff Scott Goddard announced the arrest of three individuals for mail and package theft throughout Crow Wing County. The suspects are Donald Robert Scott Jr. (Jan. 5, 1984), Jared Bruce Borchert (Oct. 31, 1986) and Jennifer Ann Scott Dec. 20, 1988) all of Emily.

Mail theft reports began in December of 2019 and continued through the time of the suspects’ arrest on Jan. 29. Sheriff’s office investigators received information from the Wright County Sheriff’s Office after the suspects were stopped in Wright County with mail in their possession from Crow Wing County addresses. Unfortunately, the suspects were released from custody before investigators were able to be notified.

The suspects were traced back to the Y-Knot Ranch Hotel in Emily where they were renting a room. Crow Wing County investigators were able to conduct a traffic stop on the three suspects and during that investigation, they located various pieces of mail inside the vehicle. A subsequent search warrant was executed on their hotel room after they were taken into custody. Tax documents, credit cards, driver’s licenses, Amazon packages and methamphetamine were all located in the searches. In all, investigators located mail and packages from 114 residences mostly located within Crow Wing County. Mail from Cass, Aitkin and Itasca counties was also located during the searches.

Sheriff Goddard states, “I am very pleased with the apprehension of these three suspects, the amount of mail they are responsible for stealing and the victims they violated is appalling. I cannot express enough appreciation regarding the work my investigators and the other law enforcement agencies have put into this investigation. This investigation will not conclude until all victims have been notified and their packages are returned. I’m asking those who have not yet reported mail or package theft to contact my office to speak with one of the investigators working on this case.”

As a reminder, it is recommended that people sign up for the postal services Informed Delivery program to monitor their undelivered mail.

Assisting the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Crosslake and Emily Police Departments and the United States Postal Inspector.
