An Aitkin County father is facing felony charges after his 2 1/2-year-old-son was shot in the face with a BB gun.
According to a press release from the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Department, Dale Vernon Preston, 38, was arraigned Friday on two counts of felony assault in the third degree, one count of felony child endangerment, one count of felony child endangerment with substantial harm, one count of felony storing of methamphetamine paraphernalia in the presence of a child, one count gross misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, fifth degree, one count misdemeanor domestic assault with bodily harm, and one count petty misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Bail was set at $2,500 with conditions, bond of $25,000 with conditions, or bail/bond of $75,000 with no conditions.
The next hearing day is Feb. 25.
According to the press release, the child was brought into the Riverwood Healthcare Center emergency room on the night of Feb. 10 with serious injuries. The child had been in the care of his father when he sustained a BB shot to his eye.
The child was airlifted to the University of Minnesota for further treatment.
An Aitkin County Sheriff’s deputy was in the emergency room on another matter when the child was brought in. After an investigation, a search warrant was executed at a home in McGregor, where the child and his parents live.
The sheriff’s department then arrested Preston.
