Solana State Forest is located just north of McGrath.
There are several entrances to the state forest. Some roads going in are easily passable by highway vehicles, depending on the season. Others, such as the Soo Line entrance, are only passable by ATV and snowmobile.
There are 48 miles of ATV trails within the state forest, which can be used for snowmobiling in the winter.
The Soo Line ATV trail runs through the forest. Considering that no designated parking areas exist within the forest, one’s easiest way to reach it via ATV/snowmobile would be to utilize the parking area in McGrath, and take the Soo Line north into the trail system.
The geography within Solana is mild and mostly level, although slightly over half of it is considered wetland. With excessive rainfall, wetlands can become hazardous (or fun, depending on one’s outlook).
While no designated campgrounds exist in the state forest, camping is permitted, as long as regulations are followed. Rules on state forest camping can be found at www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_forests/rules.html .
