Well folks, it’s State Tournament time this week for Minnesota’s wrestlers and this week we start by congratulating two of Aitkin’s finest as they prepare for the individual portion of the tourney.
Marshall Larson and Jack Grell worked their way through the Section meet last weekend to earn their spots this week. Marshall captured the title in his weight class while Jack captured second place in his class with both doing what they had to to get to the next level. Nice job guys and best of luck in the State this week.
On Dec. 27 in the opening round of the Aitkin Quarterback’s Tournament the Aitkin Gobbler girls’ basketball team won their first game of the year, a 70-65 overtime victory over Ashby. They never got a chance to win the title the next day because weather wiped out the rest of the tournament and it could not be rescheduled. Fifty-six days and 17 losses later they got into the victory column again with an entertaining 78-65 win over an Ogilvie team that came to Aitkin with a 14-9 record. We have chronicled this team’s efforts during the season and we have watched some excruciating losses, but every game saw some improvement and that continued against the Lions last week. Are they ready to go all the way as the playoffs start this week? Not going to happen, but this bunch of youngsters have really had a much better second half of the season and most nights are pretty fun to watch. They will continue to get better I think, and next season will be much different. There has never been a lack of effort and I know they will work hard in the off-season to improve.
The Section Tourney begins this week and it will probably end after the first game, but learn they will from it and be that much more experienced in 20-21. Hang in there ladies, you did all we asked in the second half, you got better and worked harder, that’s how things get better.
Oops! I forgot the Association Bowling stuff, next week for sure.
