Well folks, we start this week with some sad news as we learned of the passing last week of John Wayrynen of McGregor.

John was the brother of Dale, who was the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam. He also kept the scorebook for basketball for the Mercs for many years and that’s where I got to know him. I only saw him a couple of times a year but we chatted about our respective schools and life in general. John was a gentle guy who loved the outdoors and wildlife. He will be missed in the area communities. He was always willing to help out neighbors and friends. He is survived by brother Dave, Randall, also a friend of mine back in the 70s before he moved away from the Aitkin area. I last saw John at the McGregor gym last year when the wrestlers came to town and he purchased a book, hopefully he enjoyed it, especially the section on the Mercs. Sympathies to Dave and his family.

The coronavirus continues to keep sports at bay around the world and I look for the Olympic committee to postpone the Olympic games that were scheduled for this summer in Tokyo. Athletes have not really had the time to properly prepare for the events and I think you can add the Olympics to the list of those not being held this year. It has been a rough couple of weeks and people are hunkering down and that is about all you can do at this point, do what our leaders tell us to do and stay safe.
