Jessica Much and Trista Brandt watch as Libero Kate Pelarski returns a volley against Milaca.

The 11-13 Aitkin Gobbler volleyball team lost twice last week to a pair of 13-7 teams, Milaca and Staples-Motley.

In the Oct. 10 loss at Staples-Motley, Lydia Fellerman recorded 13 kills, Teagan Piecek added 12 kills, and Rae Nyberg contributed nine blocks and seven kills.

Although the Gobblers lost 3-1, the match up was a thriller. The Gobblers got off to a slow start in game one, trailing 9-2 with the Cardinals scoring six kills in the early going. The home team maintained a seven-point lead until Trista Brandt nailed an ace serve and Nyberg recorded a kill, pulling the Gobblers within five points. With the score 23-18 S-M, Kate Pelarski toed the service line for six straight points, propelling the Gobblers to a 24-23 lead. Two kills each by Noelle Jones and Fellerman led the comeback. Unfortunately, the Cardinals scored the final three points for a 26-24 win.

S-M took game two 25-23, but the outcome wasn’t determined until the last two points. The Gobblers trailed 21-16 when a Jones kill and Nyberg block ignited the Gobblers. Maddie Buisman’s ace hit narrowed the Cardinal’s lead to two points, and a service error by S-M knotted the score at 23. However, the Cardinals tallied the final two points for the win.

The Gobblers dominated game three. Jones, Nyberg and Fellerman recorded multiple kills in the 25-16 victory. The Cardinals led all the way in a 25-21 game four win. A Teagan Piecek kill and Nyberg block kept the Gobblers close at 20-18, but S-M controlled the net with a 5-3 run for the win.
