Aitkin’s JV volleyball

Aitkin’s JV volleyball team finished third at the Hibbing Tournament.

The Aitkin Gobbler JV volleyball team recently took third place in the Hibbing tournament. All pool play matches were two sets, but the playoff game was best of three.

In the first match Aitkin split games with Floodwood, but because the Gobblers scored more points, they won. The scores were Aitkin 25, Floodwood 17, Aitkin 20, Floodwood 25. In match two, Aitkin lost twice to eventual champions Hermantown, 11-25 and 26-27. The Gobblers defeated Deer River in match three 25-18 and 25-17.

In the consolation championship, Aitkin defeated Virginia two games to one. The scores were 25-23, 23-25, 15-6.

“The girls played great all day. Even if we would get behind, we never gave up and continued to play hard,” said JV coach Steve Michaletz. “Hermantown never lost a set, but we gave them their best competition in our second set, losing 26-27 because there was a 27-point cap. During the third place match against Virginia, we had our best serving of the day. As a team, we served 60 out of 63 for 95% with six ace serves.”
