SANDSTONE, Minn., May 20, 2019 — The Audubon Center of the North Woods (ACNW) will celebrate its 50th anniversary, June 14-16, on its campus on Grindstone Lake near Sandstone, Minn.

The public is invited to an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. Tours will be offered along with free family-friendly activities, including a zip line, climbing wall, canoing, archery, hiking and more. A picnic-style lunch will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m..

Saturday’s activities will culminate with a celebratory dinner and program featuring founding director Mike Link and current director Bryan Wood. They and others will reflect on ACNW’s progress in the 50 years since the family farm and up-north retreat was donated by St. Paul physician Marguerite Schwyzer.

The weekend will kick off on Friday evening with a social for alumni, donors and current and former staff. Following Saturday’s festivities, Sunday morning offers breakfast and choice of staff-led or independent outdoor activities.

Most of the weekend’s activities are free and drop-ins are welcome. Reservations are required for Saturday evening’s dinner and for lodging and camping packages. Event details and registration information are available at audubon-center.org/event/50th or by calling 320-245-ACNW.

The Audubon Center of the North Woods is a nonprofit environmental learning center that serves more than 10,000 people annually at its 780-acre campus near Sandstone and, as Minnesota’s largest charter school authorizer, an additional 9,000 students in 34 environmentally focused schools.
