Part of the job of a local newspaper is to chronicle events in real time for posterity. The final week in March of 2020 around Mille Lacs Lake showcased vividly some of the phenomena of times. In the nearly 30 years of Grand Casino Mille Lacs, was there ever a time when their entire parking lot was bare and all their doors shut? That was the situation on Saturday, March 22 (pictured below). On that same Saturday, there were vehicles, including a pick-up truck (pictured below left) parked on the ice of Shakopee Lake where anglers were getting in some pan fishing. On that same Saturday, swans found open water on Lake Onamia, the headwaters to the Rum River (pictured bottom left). And on Monday, March 24, the price of gas around the big lake hovered between $1.94 and $1.99 per gallon (pictured bottom left).
