The Garrison Food Shelf, located at 9541 Madison Street in Garrison, currently serves customers weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. each day.
Due to lack of volunteers being available to cover both of these daily shifts, the hours will be cut to being open only on Tuesdays, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. beginning Oct. 15.
Anyone who lives within 10 miles of Garrison and registers (fills out a brief family info card initially), then checks in with a volunteer each time they come in is eligible to visit the food shelf once monthly and pick out food that their family may need.
The Garrison Food Shelf was set up in 2004 and was originally housed in a building at Pike’s Point. After changing locations in the area several times, the food shelf finally “settled” into the current building in 2010, on Madison Avenue in Garrison under the “Dorothy’s Rainbow” sign. The Thrift Store, housed in the same building next door to the food shelf, was also established in 2010 and was set up to donate all of their sales proceeds to the food shelf.
Dorothy and Norman Barthel were instrumental in establishing the current food shelf/thrift store building where they are located today.
