Body weight is suspected to play a significant role in a person’s likelihood for developing type 2 diabetes, especially over the age of 45. In fact, being overweight or obese is considered the best predictor of the disease. Your family health care provider can assess your blood sugar levels to determine your risks and let you know if you have diabetes or prediabetes. Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar is high, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes. In fact, many people have no symptoms. In many cases, prediabetes can be reversed with healthy eating and exercises.
If you’re pursuing weight loss and are interested in receiving guidance in a program, Mille Lacs Health System has a Guided Weight Loss Therapy Program. Guided Weight Loss Therapy is not just for those dealing with diabetes, but it is another tool to help anybody with a BMI over 30. It is a collaborative weight loss effort and includes assessment, a personalized plan, behavioral change techniques and ongoing support for up to a year. The program is administered by Deanna Duret, MLHS’s Registered Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator. It’s covered by Medicare and many insurance plans, but you will want to ask your insurance provider first.
