This summer Riverwood Healthcare Center has introduced two new services to enhance a woman’s obstetric are experience. A registered nurse now fills the role of obstetrics coordinator, and a new online education tool called Babyscripts is available to mothers-to-be.
As Obstetrics coordinator, Brooke Mickelson, RN, is the go-to nurse for Riverwood obstetrics patients. She sees patients at their initial appointment for the start of prenatal care and keeps in close contact throughout the pregnancy. She can answer patient questions and concerns, consulting prenatal care providers as needed.
Mickelson has worked in health care for 10 years, with Riverwood primary care clinics and specialty clinic for the past six years. She started her career as a nursing assistant, going on to get her licensed practical nurse and registered nurse degrees from Pine Technical College and Central Lakes College, respectively.
“I have enjoyed every year at Riverwood and am so excited to continue my nursing career as the OB coordinator at Riverwood,” Mickelson said. “From the moment a patient has a positive pregnancy test to when the baby is born, I will be a resource to help with appointments, any questions or concerns that pregnancy may bring while collaborating with the clinic and hospital staff. As a mother of two beautiful girls, Kyleigh, age 8, and Makenna, 23 months, who was delivered at Riverwood, I want to make sure every mother-to-be receives the same compassionate care I did from pregnancy through delivery. “
“As the OB coordinator, I can provide our patients with the reassurance that they have everything they need from prenatal care through delivery. Coordinating with the patient’s provider, I will offer information to support patients, whether it’s addressing concerns about what’s normal for a specific phase of pregnancy or breastfeeding issues. I want patients to feel comfortable calling me any time they have questions. Together, with the patient’s health care team, we want to ensure that the transition from clinic care to hospital is seamless and stress-free during this most important and exciting time in their lives.”
For information or questions during pregnancy and post-partum care, patients may call Brooke Mickelson directly at (218) 429-3913, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Babyscripts app puts information at fingertips
Babyscripts is a mobile education platform offered by Riverwood to help educate, prepare, and empower women throughout each week of pregnancy and the first six weeks of postpartum care. After getting enrolled during the first prenatal care appointment with Riverwood, a patient will be able to download the app on her smartphone.
Inside the app, find weekly tips and tasks, customized educational content, provider-approved resources, a weight tracking feature and care team contact information. This app is a convenient tool that will complement the education provided by the Riverwood health care team to help prepare for the birth of a baby.
“I will enroll our existing OB patients in Babyscripts and each new prenatal care patient at her first appointment ,” Mickelson explained. “The Babyscripts app content is customized with our Riverwood information , which we still provide in a printed format too. I think the app will be a big hit with our patients given its convenient delivery of information at a patient’s fingertips.”
