Dr. William Karl Berger died of complications from a fall on December 6, 2019. Bill and Char had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Dec. 4.
Services will be held this spring. Memorials are preferred to the Mille Lacs Area Health System building project, St. Francis Victory Garden building fund or charities of your choice.
Bill is survived by his wife, Charlotte; son, David (Patti Jo) Berger; daughter, Michelle (Terry) Conroy;step-granddaughter, Kelsi (Jason) Lohaus; brother, Charles (Pat) Berger; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was born on Nov. 19, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minn., to immigrant parents, Karl and Erna Berger. He grew up in Minneapolis, graduated from Patrick Henry High School and the University of Minnesota. Bill met his wife, Charlotte Hillman in the Luther Memorial Church choir in 1951 and they were married in 1954. At an early age, Bill was given a violin and excelled in classical music, studied under the Concert Master of the Mpls. Symphony and played in several orchestras, school productions, weddings and funerals.
Bill became a journeyman electrician in IBEW local 292, served in the Naval Air Force and then earned his doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1965. Bill moved his young family to Onamia, Minn., where he practiced dentistry for 32 years. He thoroughly enjoyed creating smiles and the overall caring for others through dentistry. Bill was also on the Mille Lacs Hospital staff and covered the long term care facility all those years.
Living in “God’s Country” the family took numerous trips to the Boundary Waters canoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, as well as enjoying the surrounding beauty of Lake Mille Lacs. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed traveling with long time friends and family to the Dakotas, Montana and Canadian provinces for hunting and fishing. Bill served on the South Harbor township board and the Onamia School Board District 480. Bill also was past president of Rotary, Lions, and the Mille Lacs Lake association, founded Search and Rescue, and served on the Mille Lacs County planning commission. He was president of two home owner associations., QMTA and VHHA. His professional associations included the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, St. Cloud Dental Society, West Central District Dental Society and the American Orthodontic Society.
