Awanigiizhigookwe, Marissa Sam, 23-year-old resident of Garrison, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at her residence.
A funeral ceremony was held on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Community Center on the Mille Lacs Reservation with Lee Staples officiating. Interment was in the Vineland Burial Grounds. Arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Onamia.
Marissa is survived by her mother, Shawna Lee Sam; brother, Lon “Brother” Bellcourt Jr.; sister, Angel Leigh Bellcourt; grandparents, Steve Sam and Roberta Lemieux; great-grandmother, Alfreda Sam; uncles, Steve Sam II, Charlie Sam; niece, Jayde Lindsey Sam.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Diana Lemieux, Robert Lemieux Sr, and Ben Sam; great-great-grandmother, Jennie Weyaus; uncles, Lawrence Joseph Sam, and Lindsey “Linz” Sam.
Awanigiizhigookwe, Marissa was born on August 17, 1996 to Shawna Sam in Onamia, Minnesota. She enjoyed pow wow dancing, playing basketball, traveling and various tattoo designs. Marissa liked to spend her time shopping, going to the casino, and being with Jayde and her siblings.
