Russell Boyd, 83, Onamia - obituary

On June 27, 2019, Russell E. Boyd, age 83, of Onamia, Minn., began his journey into a new world, joining friends and family already there. He looked forward to being free to again enjoy the sun; see the animals, trees, and plants; hear the water flow, frogs and birds call, feel the wind.

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rolf Olsen Center in Onamia.

Arrangements are by Mille Lacs Funeral and Cremation Services.

Russell is survived by his wife, Janice (Newstrom); two daughters; Dawn Chosa, Lynnette Boyd, granddaughters; Toni Weous Teri Boyd, one brother Donivon Boyd, sisters; Darlene Sam, Carol Mojica, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; son David; siblings, Raining Boyd, Jesse Clark, Harriet Dorr, Marge Harwood. Wesley Dorr, Gladys Boyd, Franklin Boyd, and C. Alvin (Sonny) Boyd.

Russell was born to Charles and Sadie (Hawes) Boyd in Cloquet, Minn. on April 30, 1936. The family moved several times following his dad’s work on the railroad. After school Russell joined the Marine Corps (1954-1957), earning the rank of Corporal

Years of cement masonry followed, then a few years of cutting and selling wood. In 16 years as Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe language and culture instructor for Onamia schools, he brought basic native culture and crafts to the general elementary population. He also served as the school liaison to Band parents. Later, as full adults, many former students still addressed him as “Mr. Boyd” which was quite special. A year of security work, one as maintenance man at East Lake, and several years as part time driver for the Department of Labor of the Ojibwe Band followed.

Russell enjoyed time spent with family, visiting friends, traveling, fishing, and simply being outside and observing. His smile and helpfulness will be missed.
