Smudes named ‘Ag Innovator of the Year’

It was a thrilling moment for Tom and Jenni Smude, owners of Smude’s Sunflower Oil in Pierz, to receive the 2018 “Ag Innovator of the Year” award. The ceremony was held at the Embassy Suites in St. Paul, Dec. 13.

Smude’s recognized for Agricultural Innovation

The Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) announced Smude’s Brand of Pierz is the 2018 Ag Innovator of the Year. Owners Tom and Jenni Smude will be recognized at a ceremony Dec. 13 at the Embassy Suites in St. Paul.

October Weed of the Month: Invasive Plants in Grasslands

Prairies are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. Before European settlers arrived in Minnesota, there were 18 million acres of prairie. Now just one percent remains. Grasslands are highly beneficial ecosystems, and having a healthy plot of native species on your property can directly benefit you. Invasive plants such as spotted knapweed, leafy spurge and common tansy can overtake grasslands. It is best to find and control these invasive plants before they outcompete prairie plants.

September weed of the month: Knotweeds

Native to Asia, knotweeds were introduced to North America as an ornamental plant. They can spread into natural areas growing quickly and forming dense monocultures, reducing habitat diversity, and overtaking riverbanks and lakeshores. Additionally, knotweeds have the ability to grow through cracks in pavement or building foundations potentially leading to costly removal of the knotweed and repairs to the structure.

Central Lakes College annual Ag and Energy Center field day

Community members are invited to Central Lakes College’s annual Ag and Energy Research Center Field Day from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the college’s Ag and Energy Center, 26505 County Road 2, Staples.
