An Onamia man, Tyrese Smith, 19, has been charged with four counts related to felony criminal sexual conduct with a 14-year-old.
According to the complaint:
Mille Lacs Tribal police were dispatched to the Mille Lacs Health Care System Hospital in Onamia on Sept. 13 after a minor reported that Smith had touched her inappropriately multiple times a year for approximately four years.
The minor told officers that the most recent touching occurred March 2019. The minor was placed in protective foster care and participated in a forensic interview.
The minor said she sleeps with a knife under her pillow to protect herself from Smith, according to the complaint.
After the interview, Mille Lacs County Community and Veterans’ Services were notified that Smith and a third party had arrived to pick up the minor from the hospital.
Due to the allegations, Smith was taken into custody. According to the complaint, Smith was visibly nervous when he was informed of the charges. Smith declined to speak with officers.
Smith is charged with felony first-degree criminal sexual conduct–under 16–significant relationship which carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years and/or a $40,0000 fine, felony second-degree criminal sex conduct–significant relationship–under 16–multiple acts which carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years and/or a $35,000 fine, felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct–victim 13-15 which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years and/or a $30,000 fine, and a felony fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct–victim 13-15 which comes with a maximum 10 year prison sentence and/or a $20,000 fine.
