An Onamia man, Matthew Sam Mitchell, 25, is being charged for a felony count of fleeing police in a motor vehicle on Hwy. 169.
According to the criminal complaint:
On or about Wednesday, Aug. 14, Mille Lacs Tribal Police observed Mitchell driving a 2011 Kia Sorrento on Waagidaaki Drive in Onamia. Law enforcement knew Mitchell had active warrants for his arrest and requested additional units to intercept Mitchell as he turned southbound onto Hwy. 169.
A short time later, law enforcement observed Mitchell traveling southbound on Hwy. 169 at a high rate of speed. The officer activated his emergency lights and pursued the vehicle. Mitchell continued to drive a high rate of speed, passing other vehicles on the shoulder of the road. Other officers joined the pursuit but were unable to keep up with Mitchell’s vehicle. The pursuit was terminated after a short time. Approximately 45 minutes later, Mitchell’s vehicle was located at his residence, but he was not located. Mitchell was located on a later date.
