Brandon Lawson, of Brainerd

Brandon Lawson, of Brainerd, thought he would try his hand at water fishing, possibly a new sport he may have coined in response to the amazing fishing on Mille Lacs Lake.

A Brainerd man, Brandon Lawson, along with his friends, were having such good luck with fishing on Sunday, July 7 that he decided he would give fishing a try without a boat.

Lawson jumped in the water, wearing his life jacket and fishing pole in hand. The fishing was so good he was able to catch a walleye while swimming in the water.

“I just decided it would be a good idea because we were doing so good,” said Lawson. “I’ve never caught a fish in a life jacket. It’s the bite of the century!”

Lawson was fishing on the Garrison Reef and cast about 50 feet he estimates. His friends, Nate and Alicia Billman, took video of Lawson.

“I fished all my life but have never experienced so much great fishing. We got 45 fish in three hours using leeches,” said Lawson.

The video will be posted to the Mille Lacs Messenger website at later this week.
