Well, I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. It’s back to the business of trimming the perch population down here. We had a couple exotic meals with family over the holidays that gave me indigestion, but now it’s getting back to normal, and that’s just fine with me!

I’ve heard a lot of talk up top about all the slush holes that are out there on top of the ice. Lots of resorts are talking about it on their Facebook pages. Sounds like most have some type of a road started for ATVs and such, but the snow machine seems to be the preferred method of travel. It’s a lot easier to gun a sled over and through the slush than any other type of machine, from what I understand.

Ice reports are still in the 5-12 inch range, depending on where you are on the big lake. So they can vary in a hurry–safety should always be of the utmost importance. I heard a rumor of someone going through the ice on Leech Lake with a three-quarter ton pick-up and a tandem axle wheel house … now it may be January and all, but don’t forget about all the snow we’ve had on thin ice and now all the relatively warm weather recently. Not much new ice is forming right now. So don’t be that guy. When in doubt, check with a resort, use their roads and enjoy the great fishing to be had!

Loose lines and tight lips,
