•    Bob Karn, an English teacher at St. Cloud Cathedral High School for the past 45 years, has also been that school’s baseball coach for decades. In fact, he is the winningest coach in Minnesota baseball history.

A football season to remember – Onamia ‘75

Editor’s note: Forty years ago, on Nov. 14, the then Onamia Warriors earned their way to the state Class B championship football game against Gaylord High. The game was staged at Apollo High School in St. Cloud, and many in the Mille Lacs area were caught up in the excitement of the occasion. Coaching the OHS boys were Pete Eikren and John Holbrook. Holbrook, now retired and living north of Brainerd on Lake Hubert, reminisces through column and poetry about that glorious year in Onamia High sports lore.

•    During the Onamia Panthers’ girls basketball win over Carlton on Jan. 20, Onamia senior Ashley Golombowski tied a school record for most rebounds in a game with 20. The other two sharing that stat are Beth Holbrook and Amanda Blomer.

•    For the second consecutive year, the Lastrup Lakers amateur baseball team earned their way deep into the state championship series this past late summer — this time finishing 16th among over 300 teams in Class C ball.

•    Isle senior point guard Amber Zimpel has steadily moved up the ranks of Isle’s top career point-scoring list. The night in early January when she scored her 1,000th career point put her in 11th place. One month later, she set her school’s single-game scoring record, knocking down 40 points against Rush City.

•    Isle High golfing phenom Grant Exsted, who the past two springs finished third and sixth place respectively at the state Class A tournament, accepted an invitation to play Hazeltine National Golf Club in mid-July. He turned in a score of 79. “Even though we used the member tee boxes the course was still long,” Grant said. “It played to over 6,700 yards.” Grant said he hit 16 of the 18 greens in regulation, but had 42 putts, including six 3-putts, or his score would have been even better.
