Section 5A track is made up of 29 girls teams, and because there is just a two-class system in the state, the Mille Lac Raiders are forced to compete against many larger schools than their own. This was the case on a beautiful late spring day when two individuals from the Raiders team – 9th-grader Aiyanna Mitchell and 8th-grader Svea Carlson – competed in the Section 5A Track and Field Meet staged at St. John’s University.

Both girls competed in the pole vault, clearing two heights before bowing out at the 8’6” level. Clearing 8’6” would have been personal best for both athletes. Mitchell finished in a tie for seventh and Carlson finished 13th among the 21 girls who jumped.

Mitchell also ran the 300m hurdles, but finished back of the pack.

“Both our qualifiers for sections are young, so they have lots to look forward to in the years to come,” Raiders coach Jeff Walz said.

The Pierz Pioneers won the boys division of the tourney and the Rockford Rockets won the girls division.

 Season wrap:

Aiyanna Mitchell earned her second straight team MVP honor leading the Raiders in points scored with 315. Another 9th-grader, Katie Rocholl was second in team scoring earning her team Most Improved Player.
