The Onamia Panthers varsity volleyball team opened its 2019 campaign at home on Aug. 27 and beat the Aitkin Gobblers in a close encounter, 4-1.
“If you were at that match, you saw a very exciting four games,” said Onamia head coach Marcia Balder.
Indeed: the match was intense.
Onamia won the opening set in overtime, 27-25, then lost by three points in set two before winning sets three and four 25-14 and 25-20.
Aitkin is no longer in the Great River Conference, but they remain close rivals of the perennially powerful Onamia Panthers.
Statistic leaders for Onamia included Kailee Barnett, MaKayla Balder and Roxann Emerson who combine for 40 digs for saves, Balder serving 19 perfect with three aces, Ashley Rogers with 11 perfect serves with three aces and Barnett with 14 serves and two aces.
Balder led the team in kills with 11, followed by nine from Barnett, seven by Lily Orazem and six by Krissy Dahl.
