The Mille Lacs Raider Cross Country team traveled to Pine City for an early season meet on Sept. 5.
The 14-team meet included all the Great River Conference teams and some Class AA competition.
The Raiders fielded a team of five in the varsity race.
“I decided to run some of my JV runners, so we would have a team,” coach Jeff Walz said. “They ran their best.”
Freshmen Nevaeh Merrill finished 38th, and would have been second in the JV race. “Some sacrifices were made for the sake of the team. I was proud of them.”
Mille Lacs’ top runner, Molly Saboo, finished 11th, earning a medal and helping the team climb to seventh-place overall among the 14 schools competing. “We were the highest finishers of the GRC teams, which was a nice surprise.” Walz said.
Freshmen Lauren Smart and Vanessa Smith filled out the team, running in their first varsity race.
Junior Hailey Remer completed the team.
Walz said he has options in the coming weeks of the season with a strong junior high team, saying that moves can be made to strengthen his varsity team. Seventh-grader Arielle Pendegayosh won the junior high race.
