Raiders Track - Svea Carlson

Over the hurdle

Onamia 8th-grader Svea Carlson has done well in the hurdles at various meets this season. At the Pine City meet she set a personal best in the pole vault clearing eight feet.

April 26 was a cool and windy day, not particularly inviting to the eight track teams, including the Mille Lacs Raiders girls squad, who turned out to compete in the Chengwatana Meet in Pine City.

The powerhouses among the eight teams were expected to be Pine City and Mora, and that is how the meet played out. Mora produced 173.5 points to capture first place, and Pine City was a close second with 162 points.

Mille Lacs finished fifth with 63 points.

“I knew the meet would have excellent competition, so I was hoping for some personal bests and great performances from our girls. And 9th-grader Aiyanna Mitchell and 8th-grader Svea Carlson provided just that,” Raiders coach Jeff Walz said following the meet.

Carlson and Mitchell finished first and second in the pole vault with Svea setting a personal best vault of eight feet. “I was so excited to win my first vault competition. Aiyanna usually beats me,” Carlson said.

“I was so proud of the 18 points these two girls provided our team,” Walz said.

This was the first time this season that the Raiders finished a meet lower than third place.
