Raiders Wrestling - Ethan Benson

On a roll

Isle senior Ethan Benson is currently riding a 10-match winning streak.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, the Mille Lacs Raiders wrestling team traveled to Cloquet to wrestle in a quadrangular meet against Great River Conference foes Proctor and Cloquet, along with non-conference Nashwauk-Greenway.

The Raiders came away with a clean sweep, beating all three schools to bump their record to 6-5 heading into the third week of January.

In the first meet of the evening, Mille Lacs squared off against Proctor and came away with a 66-18 win.

Zach Remer, Cam Wilkes and Ethan Benson got wins for the Raiders in the lopsided affair.

Mille Lacs followed that meet with another rout, this time over Nashwauk by a score of 61-15.

Daniel Miller, Bradley Bernu, Colin Goor, and Josh Golombowski helped get the bulk of the points for the Raiders.

In the final meet, the Raiders faced the Cloquet Lumberjacks, and while the match went back and forth, the Raiders prevailed and came away with a 51-27 victory.

Zach Remer got the team going with a win, and Cam Wilkes followed with a pin of his own.

After five straight Lumberjack wins, Cloquet took an 18-point lead.

The Raiders countered by receiving a few Cloquet forfeits and getting pins from Ethan Benson and Josh Golombowski to send the Cloquet team home as unhappy lads.

Raiders coach Josh Hughley was thrilled with his boys’ performance that night, saying, “Right now we have some guys wrestling well. Wilkes and Goor each beat a kid who had beaten them earlier, and Ethan (Benson) is riding a 10 match win streak.”

Hughley added, “ Zach Remer continues to be a spark plug for us at 103, and Josh Golombowski is becoming a real closer for us at heavyweight.”

The Raiders were gearing up to close out their regular season on Jan. 16 with a quad meet at Royalton.
